Jorge Ben is definitely one of my favourite artists of all time. The few records of his that I found on my trip to Brazil are some of the most prized pieces of my modest vinyl collection. When I saw that Brazilian experimental producer Psilosamples had uploaded a Jorge Ben remix of ‘Taj Mahal’ I was initially a bit worried. As soon as I pressed play, my fears were drowned in a wave of bouncy vocals samples, delicate percussion, and guitar chops.

This Psilosamples remix is a fantastic reworking of a classic track from Brazilian musical history. The song ‘Taj Mahal’, which first appeared on Jorge’s 1972 album Ben, is one of his most famous works and was composed as a dedication to acclaimed American blues musician Taj Mahal. In 1979, Taj Mahal returned the musical dedication with a track titled ‘Jorge Ben’ on his album Live & Direct with The International Rhythm Band. The song is also notorious due to Rod Stewart stealing the melody for his 1978 hit ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?’.

Also check out these 2 versions by the master Jorge Ben himself. The first is the original from ‘Ben’ in 1972, and the second is from ‘Africa Brasil’ in 1976.
