Listen: Nate Smith – Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere

This recent release by drummer, composer & producer Nate Smith is the most beautiful piece of work we’ve discovered this week, hands down… In conceiving this album, the New York based artist aimed for a quote unquote true band sound: improvising with drums or piano, or singing ideas into a voice recorder first, with a main focus on rhythm and melodies.

By collaborating with a wide array of artists (strings, vocalists, fender rhodes, percussion, electric bass, alto and soprano saxophones, violins—you name it), he certainly nailed that “true band sound.”

Which doesn’t come as a surprise, after having played and recorded with artists such as Jose James, Dave Holland, Betty Carter, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Chris Potter, and Ravi Coltrane.

The result: truly amazing jazz and soul which you shouldn’t miss out on.

Just an ordinary guy always on the hunt for extraordinary music. Not just as the founder of The Find Magazine & Rucksack Records, but also as a freelance music journalist (bylines at Tracklib, Bandcamp, Wax Poetics, DIG Mag, among others) and—above all—out of love for all kinds of good music.
