Review: heRobust – Late Night / Morning After (2012)

Atlanta based experimental beatmaker heRobust recently dropped two free albums on the always dope and boundary pushing label Saturate Records. Ever since his amazing debut LP “Albumin”, I’ve been anticipating more glitched up beats from the farthest outlying planets of the hip hop galaxy.

Atlanta based experimental beatmaker heRobust recently dropped two free albums on the boundary pushing and always dope label Saturate Records. Ever since his amazing debut LP Albumin, I’ve been anticipating more glitched up beats from the farthest outlying planets of the hip hop galaxy.

These new releases show heRobust picking up right where Albumin left off, delving further into the realms of heady glitch hop. The bass lines on tracks like “Coma Toast” are as grimy as Gollum when he lived deep in the goblin tunnels of the Misty Mountains eating nothing but cave fish and coveting the Ring. The synths are wonky and extraplanetery like the ice chunks that float around Saturn in rings. Rich textures and layers build upon one another for a futuristic sonic assault on your ears and mind. Together the albums are a well designed and cohesive Falcon Punch to the face of future funk hip hop bass that will probably snap a few neck vertabrae. It’s all good though don’t worry, listen to the music, it foreshadows a technologically advanced future, a future where robot doctors can implant your neck with new self aware titanium computer chip embedded vertebrae that can do your taxes while you groove to beats.

A 7″ vinyl single limited to 250 copies is also available for €7, or for €21 in combination with a white or black shirt featuring the heRobust logo. So if you like the free music, this is a great opportunity to support an awesome artist and label for some dope physical representations of art. The 7″ features a track from each album, “Facebook Lift” and “Swagriculture”, which are probably my favourites 2 songs from all 16 beats released. These two albums are definitely not releases you want to pass over, and heRobust is certainly an artist to keep an eye on for the future, the dude is on top of his beat game like Pelé in the 60s.
