Listen: Sample Studies of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, Nujabes, Souls of Mischief & Prince Paul

Podcast The Sample Study by producer and sound designer 2 Mello is the “How It’s Made” for sampling. The series puts a hip hop track next to the original sampled track, to show how the production was done. With episodes roughly between 15 and 30 minutes, they’re easy to digest—also because of 2 Mello’s pleasantly relaxed way of explaining things.

The selected tracks up till now are really well-known, so don’t expect any obscure stuff so far (maybe with the exception of video game music by Adam Freeland). Think of the well-known case of Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew” for Tribe’s “Electric Relaxation“. Or the sax from Tom Scott’s “Today” for “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)“.

Nevertheless, the episodes are interesting to listen to to refresh your sampling know-how. Or as an introduction, in case you’re a novice sample-head who wants to dive deeper into the rich musical heritage. Below you can listen to our five favorite Sample Study episodes:
