Article: The making of ‘Pale Blue Dot’

I think “Pale Blue Dot” has some of that loose, statement based, “flow” that comes specifically with writing without paper near by… However, I did completely destroy my desire to ever hear the actual beat I wrote to again

I won’t tell you which beat I originally wrote this song too but it was back in ’09 on my walk to the gym. Now that I think about it, I wonder how many people catch me walking with my headphones on mouthing words?

I used to only write lyrics in my head; it wasn’t till the middle of recording my first record that I started to write on paper. I think “Pale Blue Dot” has some of that loose, statement based, “flow” that comes specifically with writing without paper nearby… However, I did completely destroy my desire to ever hear the actual beat I wrote to again. Ha.

The track is inspired by my own experience with extremists (of the dangerous kind), a few books, and a lot of documentaries. The focus for me was to try and harness my angst for that distinct blindness caused by boundless self-indulgence. The extremes that root themselves subconsciously to ones self-interests while masking itself as “passion” and “indignation”.

The funny thing about this song is that it was originally recorded to a ukulele. My first intent for this track, sonically, was to be an “island” song. Something you could hear relaxing on the beaches of the North Shore, but couldn’t escape the lyrics. I liked the original version, but it was a little TOO laid back, ha. I called up Stro and we split the difference, attempting to make the chorus the time for reflection and the verse the time for aggression.

Giannina Ashe is a friend of mine and also the sister of a good friend. I was given a recording of her first work in ’03 and I was just waiting to put her on the right song, I’m grateful. Check my website for more ‘making of‘ blogs.
