Stream: Klaus Layer – The Adventures of Captain Crook
In the past, Redefinition Records have generally stuck with more established underground veterans like co-owner Damu The Fudgemunk, K-Def, Grap Luva, and Kev Brown. However, with their newest release, Redef have extended a branch across the Atlantic Ocean to the land of Germany and the MPC beat wizard Klaus Layer.
The Adventures of Captain Crook is a leviathan of boom bap layered with soul and jazz sampleage and garnished with a healthy dose of psychedelia.
One thing that stands out on the LP is the skull snapping drums that drive the sample heavy instrumentals. If you have back problems, steer clear of this release or you may end up with a fractured spinal column due to the sheer percussive force of the beats. To compliment the raw beats, Blu is featured on two of the tracks and Scienze joins him on “Come Back”. For the record heads, the project can be purchased on colored or black vinyl, and you can buy the “Illest In Charge” single on transparent or black soundsheet.
