After the news last week that Def Jux goes on an indefinitely hiatus, another label calls it a quit. This time Appletree Records officially announced the end of the label.

Music: Peche Noire – Incroyable

The Amsterdam based label was established in 2006 by Wiecher Troost, Rogier Smalhout and Nalden. Artists as Sotu The Traveller, Hayzee, DJ Lefto and Louis Bordeaux were part of the label. ‘A new breed of jazz, funk, soul and hip hop’ was their motto, with a lot of fresh releases throughout the years.

Identity
In a Dutch interview, founder Wiecher Troost explains that it was too hard to run the label financially; they didn’t get what they hoped for. According to him it was an amazing experience and they managed to create a company with a clear identity, but that comes to an end now. The ambitions of the three founders aren’t gone, so maybe they’ll continue their work on a later date.

Apple
Another reason for the label to quit, was the attitude of Apple. The label tried to register the name ‘Appletree’, but the major US company got in the way. After a lot of phone calls, meetings and attempts, Appletree Records decided to stop trying, because it’s an impossible mission to fight against the major company.
