Terrible news today: producer Nujabes died in a fatal car accident in Tokyo on February 26th. While people were hoping for a hoax, the news got confirmed by Hydeout Productions (Japanese source) and friend/colleague Shing02. Nujabes has passed away at the age of 36.
“We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend,” says Shing02 in a statement. “Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. It continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music.”
We are not exaggerating when we say Nujabes is a true legend and a jazz hop pioneer. He introduced many music enthusiasts to Japanese and jazz-influenced hip hop with highly influential releases such as Modal Soul and Methaphorical Music, promoting a wide array of emcees and fellow producers with his music by way of collaborating as well as signing several artists to his label, Hydeout Productions.
This is a huge loss for music, but his legacy is so strong that it will live on forever. We wish his family, friends and close ones all the best in these times of mourning.
