News: Releases by Lapalux, Shlohmo & Mux Mool on February 7th
February 7th is an important date every year for the dedicated hip hop head. Why? Well, on that day in 1974, two humans were born on opposite sides of the globe that during their tragically short lives, would change the face of hip hop forever. Those two babies were James Yancey, better known as J. Dilla, and Jun Seba, better known as Nujabes.
It is truly remarkable to reflect upon their lives, the beautiful music they created, and the legacy they left behind. Words cannot fully describe the magic they spread with their minds and the power of sound. The Detroit and Tokyo legends will always be recognized as two of the most groundbreaking innovators of the genre.
Let’s have a gander at what February 7th holds in store for us this year. There are three releases I am currently aware of that will drop on the revered date of February 7th… Shlohmo, Lapalux, and Mux Mool will each drop a project on that date. What the hell?! Those three artists create some of the most boundary pushing, unique, and exciting music from the genre often classified as “futurebeats”.
Lapalux recently signed to Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder, and his upcoming EP When You’re Gone will mark his first release for them. Honestly, when I listen to Lapalux, my jaw tends to drop and my mouth just hangs open as I attempt to comprehend his sound. It is nothing short of mind-blowing and the dude is definitely at the top of his game, this release promises to rip brains from spinal cords and leave a whole generation of beat addicts wandering around like zombies. Check out this sampler for the EP and it’s alright, you can drool.

Shlohmo has been making music for a while but really made his first major mark in music with last years Bad Vibes, which deservedly received critical acclaim from both mainstream and “underground” media. I saw him open for Tokimonsta and Daedelus about six months or so before Bad Vibes and was massively impressed by his haunting style. His upcoming 3-track EP titled Vacation on Friends of Friends Music will feature remixes from including Airhead, Salva, Nicolas Jaar and Groundislava. This release again is highly exciting, check out the track “wen uuu” below.
Mux Mool, like the two cats mentioned previously, has a very unique sound and actually an even wider array of styles. His 2010 album Skulltaste was just crammed full of madness. His new album, Planet High School, will be released through Ghostly International and from each of the 3 songs shared so far, will again display his versatility and talent in a big way. Check out the first song that was leaked; “Palace Chalice” below.
So that is currently what I am looking forward to on February 7th. If you know of any other releases coming out that day please let us know! I’m sure there are more.
